Zyje w strefie pustynno - skalistej północnej Afryki. Może osiągać 1 m wysokości, zaś długość 1,6 m, ogon do 20 cm. Wagi do 140 kg. Gatunek nie tak rzadko spotykany, jednak kilka podgatunków jest na wymarciu. Posiada ubarwienie jasne, na przodzie ciała włosy są długie i jasne, tworzące bujną grzywę. Samice są dużo mniejsze od samców. Dość długie, wygięte ku tyłowi rogi u samca osiągają długość około 80 cm. Odżywia się roślinami, potrafią znieść braki w pożywieniu, dzięki czemu mogą one zamieszkiwać kamieniste wyżyny jak i tereny pustynne. Żyją pojedynczo lub w małych stadach.
